McClung:--Henry Clay McClung, one of the most highly respected and widely known pioneer residents of Vernon Township died Tuesday night November 20, 1917, at half past 11:00 o’clock at the Winfield Hospital following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. McClung was a man of strong convictions and firmly believed in the principles of right living and a Christian life. The fact that he has lived cleanly, has kept within him a pure heart and full regard for the great Law Giver.
Mr. McClung was born on January 28, 1845 and came to Cowley County, Kansas in the early eighties. He settled on a farm in Vernon Township west of Winfield. There Mr. McClung turned the virgin prairie into farmland, tilled the soil, sowed and reaped and endured all the vicissitudes of the pioneer. He was a consistent member of the Baptist faith and was instrumental in the proposition and a propagation of that faith in his vicinity by assisting in organizing the Mount Zion Baptist Church six miles west of Winfield.
He is survived by two sons, Rev. Oscar McClung, pastor of the Baptist Church at Creston, Iowa, and E. W. McClung of Winslow, Arizona, who were with him when death summoned Him to the Great Beyond. Several brothers and sisters also survive. Marsh McClung of Vernon is a brother.
The funeral will be held from the Mount Zion Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. Charles F. Mathews.
