Date and Paper unknown at this time Paris Epling was born at Newport, Giles county, Va., March 23rd 1849. He enlisted in the civil war at the age of sixteen years and served his country four years. In 1860 he learned the carpenter's trade and continued to work at the same several years. In 1875 he was married to Miss Emma Price. In 1883 they came to Kansas and settled on a farm near Muscotah where he lived until 1896, when he moved to Holton. February 13, 1900 he had a stroke of paralysis that injured his speech. He never recovered entirely from it and October 13, 1900 he had another stroke from which he lost his mind and grew worse until December 21, it became necessary to send him to the hospital at Topeka, Kansas, where he died May 27, 1902, aged 53 years, 2 months and 4 days. He has been a member of the Baptist church since 20 years of age and lived an honest upright life. His motto always was "Do as you would be done by." His funeral was preached by Rev J.C. Krieg at the United Brethren church, where the Mondern Woodmen of America took charge of the remains, as he had often requested, he was buried by the order, at the Holton cemetery May 30. His wife and eight children survive him, two daughters having proceded him to the Great Beyond. His family mourns the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. |
