One of the surprises that come suddenly and shock a community was given our citizens Saturday night, when it was announced that John W. Cubine, who left his shoe shop on E.8th street near the plaza a few minutes before, died at his home from heart trouble.
On returning home he complained of a pain near his heart and a bath, but upon retiring it became worse and Mrs. Cubine phoned for a physician but before his arrival death had ended his sufferings.
Mr. Cubine was one of the oldest business men in Coffeyville and had made a reputation for fine boot making, his "cow-boy" boot business extending for a hundred miles. He had been in the same line of business here since 1876. Mr. Cubine was born at Brand, Va., Nov,1. 1845, and served in the civil war as a confederate soldier. In 1870 he was married to Miss Alice Wright. in Gentry county, Missouri. The wife, on son, Claude, and three daughters survive him, the daughters being Mrs. Harry Isham, Mrs. Ward Graves and Miss Georgia, all residents of this city although the latter has been an honored teacher in the schools of Bozeman, Mont.
Mr. Cubine was a member of the M. W. A. and the A. 0. U. W. and Select Knights lodges, and M. E. Church. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the residence on East Eighth street, at 2 P. M. under the direction of the lodges, Rev. Potts preaching the sermon and interment was made .in Elmwood cemetery.
Note: John W. Cubine was the uncle of George Cubine, one of the Coffeyville residents killed by the Dalton Gang October 5, 1892.
