George
Wesley Wigginton
George W. Wigginton was
born of good southern parents near Winchester, Frederick
county, Va., in July 1835
and died at his home in
Lyndon Monday, March 6, 1911 in his 77th year, succumbing
the to ravages of diabetes
and accompanying old age
with its infirmities. He had been bedfast about six weeks,
nursed and cared for by a devoted,
sacrificing wife who
labors were unavailing to hold the life's companion with her.
Being born and reared in a southern state, he, in the prime of his young manhood, espoused the cause of the Confederacy
and enlisted in the 11th
Virginia Cavalry, serving during the war under General Ashby,
taking part in the campaigns up and
down the Shenandoah valley. Such
was his education and honesty, that he was connected during
the most of his
service, in the quartermaster's department, although
he actively participated the battle of Gettysburg, Pa.,
Beverly, W. Va., and numerous other engagements.
On December 3, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Francis Renner who still survives him to mourn the loss
of a
loving companion and a provident
husband. To this union was born one daughter that only
reached her fourth year
till she was called to the Heavenly home. His only
other known relatives are nephews and nieces in Va., one
nephew in
Iowa and one in Pennsylvania.
He, with his helpful wife, emigrated to Kansas and located in Lyndon in 1884 since which time he has been a continuous
resident, winning the friendship and
respect of all by his honest, upright living and disposition
to oblige and be helpful,
even at a sacrifice of his own
interests. His life was simple, industrious, honest and
eminently satisfactory in every sense.
His funeral services are to be held today, at his late home with ___ G. Barth of the Baptist Church officiating. His
pallbearers are members of the local. G. A.
R. Post, that deem it a privilege to show that all enmity
and ill feeling
engendered by the Great Civil Strife has passed away and
to further evidence their esteem and friendship for one who
wore the gray.
Interment will be made In the Lyndon cemetery.
The bereaved wife has the
sympathy of the whole community in her loss and great
loneliness.
